The 2001 Annual Fishing competition for the best angler of the club, was held on Sunday 15th July after being cancelled the previous week due to rough weather. We departed from the barrage at the usual time of 0600 hors. Yawn! Yawn! The journey to the Tees Mouth was over quite quickly having departed from the downstream side of the barrage, and soon it was "OK lines out" and "macky bashing" for some bait. It was very noticeable that young Tony "Cagney" Walker (who was sitting on the right hand side of Ray our expert) was soon pulling 'em in and in good quantity. On the left of Ray was Bill Weighell, and at the time had landed twice the amount of fish Ray had caught (two). Being a proclaimed expert we asked Ray for his views on why he wasn't joining in with the fishing? Ray announced quite modestly he was rigged for catching bigger fish.....and so he was.....us! Well I mean we all fell about laughing. We've never had such a good laugh since **e found out he wasn't catching fish because in his haste he'd forgotten to remove the protective corks from his hooks before lowering his line! The wind had been increasing all morning and became quite strong in the afternoon and the fishing went off. We returned to port just after 3.00 pm having had a good day fishing (or in some cases just a good day) and the winners had been decided. The Walker Perrin Trophy for the largest cod went to Tony "Cagney" Walker. The Shipwreck Marine Trophy for the largest fish landed was also won by Tony. The fish were huge - well at least two pounds! What more is there to say, except we all had a most enjoyable day spent in good company and with good conversation. Even John's tea was good. Thanks Craig. |
